Reddit is one of the most significant online communities in the world, and for sexual wellness brands it represents something genuinely unusual: a platform that allows adult content, encourages anonymity, and hosts some of the most candid consumer conversations happening anywhere online. The question is not whether it matters to this category. It does. The question is whether brands are showing up there in a way that is actually useful.
At EroSpain 2026, Sciart's Leea Tatarski and Lauren Bailey conducted a survey of brands attending the show to understand how they currently view Reddit - and what they think of it. What they found was striking in its simplicity: almost no middle ground. Brands either knew very little about the platform, or they were already active on it and fully understood its advantages.
"It was rare to find a middle ground," says Leea. "Companies either knew very little about Reddit, or they were already active on the platform and fully understood its advantages."
That gap matters because Reddit is increasingly part of the research journey for sexual wellness consumers. People want real opinions from real users. They want to ask questions they would not ask on Instagram or in a product review. The anonymity Reddit provides makes people comfortable sharing experiences, writing detailed reviews, and seeking recommendations in a way no other platform replicates. For brands, that means Reddit is not just a community tool. It is a source of customer insight, product feedback, and market intelligence that most brands are leaving untapped.
Lauren's observation on what makes Reddit distinct from every other platform is the clearest starting point: "There's really nothing quite like Reddit at the moment. Not only does it allow adult content, but it also provides a space where people can discuss sexual wellness products openly and anonymously."
When Leea and Lauren asked brands what they are using Reddit for, the answer was a bit of everything. Some use it primarily for market research and competitor analysis. Others monitor discussions for customer feedback and product development. More mature Reddit strategies include community engagement, creator collaborations, and brand visibility. The most successful brands, across all of those approaches, share one thing in common: they view Reddit less as an advertising platform and more as a community and research tool.
The most common reason brands give for not using Reddit is simply a lack of understanding. Many are not aware of how much relevant discussion is already taking place around their products, their competitors, and the wider category. They do not realise what they are missing because they have never looked.
When it comes to differences between established brands and newer entrants, the findings were more nuanced than expected. "What matters most isn't necessarily how established a brand is, but how willing it is to listen, engage authentically, and provide value to the community," says Lauren. Newer brands often have the advantage of being able to build relationships and shape conversations from the beginning. More established brands sometimes have to overcome existing perceptions, but Reddit can also be a powerful place to improve sentiment through transparency and genuine engagement.
For brands thinking about where to start, Leea's advice is consistent: become a user first. Create a personal account and spend time in communities that genuinely interest you. It does not have to be work-related. Observe how people communicate, what humour they use, what behaviours are accepted. People behave differently when they are anonymous, and different communities have very different cultures. You cannot approach Reddit the way you would approach any other social platform, and you will not understand that until you have spent time there.
The trajectory is clear. When Leea first started working with Reddit in 2021, only a handful of well-known sexual wellness brands were actively participating. Today, significantly more brands want to understand the platform and build a presence. At the same time, consumers are moving away from traditional advertising and toward authentic, community-led recommendations. The brands that succeed will be the ones that contribute meaningfully to discussions rather than simply promoting products.
Reddit is not a workaround for a category that cannot rely on paid platforms. For sexual wellness brands, it is a primary channel - and the brands treating it that way already are building an advantage that will be difficult to close.
